Early Learning and the Reggio Emilia Approach

early learning reggio emilia approach

As you may be aware, our School听is inspired听by theReggio Emilia approach听within our Early Learning Centre. The Reggio Emilia Philosophy is an innovative and inspiring approach to early childhood education. This approach views young听children听as听curious about their world and have听the听powerful potential to learn from all that听surrounds听them. This听way of learning is particularly important for our children听todaywhere they are growing up in a world with so much change. In the听current situation with Covid-19, we believe progressive education and听an active involvement in learning is essential.

Being such听unprecedented听times,听there is a constant need to adapt to change. The ELC curriculum is flexible and emerges from children鈥檚 ideas, thoughts and observations. With everything going on in the world听now, we thought it would be a great opportunity to share this approach in more detail. We look at听the importance of this听approach for听the foundations of early learning听and the impact听that our teachers, parents, community, andenvironment听have on our children‘s learning.

The philosophy of the Reggio Emilia approach is that听children are full of curiosity and creativity, and they听are viewed as听active, capable and valuable members of their听community. During their early years of learning children are encouraged to explore and question their world.听It has a great emphasis on play, and highlights the importance of play on cognitive, social and emotional development.听Thisphilosophy听isn鈥檛 a set听model,听yet an approach based around fundamental values about how听children听individually听learn.

Teachers

A听Reggio inspired teacher is more of a co-learner than an instructor, and there is an emphasis on the need听for them to observe students听and then adapt based on the听areas that interest them.听Teachers will听collaborate听with their students and will continuously听guide experiences through open-ended questions. They are a听mentor and a听partner in the child鈥檚 learning process, and听their goal is to encourage听further exploration of a child鈥檚 interests,听by听developing projects along the way.

Parents & Community

This approach听holds the idea听that parents and the wider community are an essential part of the learning process and they have a听collective听responsibility for children. Parents are viewed as partners and听collaborators,听and听they听are invited to play an active role in their听child’s听learning听within and beyond the classroom.听The atmosphere of the community impacts the听child and听being involved in a community is paramount to their learning. This approach听believes that a child forms their identity through their interactions with their peers, adults and most importantly the world around them.

Environment

The physical environment in which the children are based in is a crucial part to the Reggio Emilia approach. This approach highlights the belief that children make a sense of their world through an environment that听is stimulating and supports relationships between people, the world and ideas. The classroom is often referred to as a 鈥榯eacher鈥 itself, as it motivates children to explore, play and learn, and creates a sense of听belonging.
